GM’s First Electric Car: Chevy Volt April 1, 2010 | 12:21 pm

The chevy Volt is General Motors’ first electric car. It is a 5-door compact hatchback. It can run 40 miles on battery and 300 miles on gasoline engine. It has got a generator that can send power directly to car’s motor. The technology is much better than electric hybrids like Prius of Toyota. It was unveiled in 2007 Detroit auto show as a concept car, and is likely to be launched in December 2010. The coast hasn’t been decided yet, though the estimates are around $ 40,000.

In the beginning, there will be only 10,000 cars and around 60,000 in the next year. It has got a lithium ion battery pack situated in a tunnel between front seats and going under the rear seat. The driving is exactly like a normal car and acceleration and braking is very good. As yet, it has got a single body design and options to choose are very few. The car comes with a charging code and full charging takes approximately 5 hours. The company has yet to give the gas mileage. There is an option of choosing polished chrome or silver paint on the wheal spokes. You can also choose two-tone leather upholstery over the standard cloth. There is also an option of heated seats.
